Help with flashbacks

A flashback is a memory without a timestamp. The work is not to forget it β€” it is to give it a date so it stops arriving as the present.

Help with flashbacks

Why the memory feels live

Traumatic memories can store without the usual contextual markers β€” when it happened, that it ended, that you survived. Without those markers the memory replays as current experience, complete with body response.

  • Sensory intrusions β€” a smell, a sound, a phrase
  • Losing the present moment briefly
  • Body reactions with no obvious trigger
  • Avoiding places or media that might set it off

Grounding before processing

Nothing is processed until you can reliably return to the present. Grounding skills come first, are practised, and are checked. This is not a delay β€” it is what makes the processing safe and effective.

Reprocessing without retelling

EMDR works on fragments, not narratives. You are never required to give a full account of what happened in order for the memory to be reprocessed.

Common questions

Will therapy make the flashbacks worse?+

Not when paced properly. Sessions are planned so you leave more regulated than you arrived.

How do I know if it is a flashback or a bad memory?+

A flashback carries present-tense body experience. A memory feels past. That distinction guides the plan.

Can flashbacks be treated online?+

Often yes, once grounding is solid. Complex presentations sometimes do better in person.

Give the memory a date

A free intro call is the first step β€” no detail about the event is required on that call.
