Online therapy vs in-person
For most presentations the outcomes are comparable. The real question is which format you will actually attend consistently.
What the evidence broadly shows
Remote delivery of structured therapies performs comparably to in-person for common presentations such as anxiety, depression and single-incident PTSD. The differences that matter are practical ones rather than clinical ones.
- Online: no travel, wider choice, easier for shift workers
- In-person: fewer distractions, richer non-verbal information
- Online suits regular sessions across a busy rota
- In-person often better for complex or dissociative presentations
Setting online up properly
A private room, headphones, a door that closes, a device that does not wobble, and a plan for what happens if the connection drops. Sessions taken in a car outside work are better than nothing, but only just.
Online EMDR specifics
EMDR runs online using approved bilateral stimulation tools, and works well once grounding is reliable. For highly dissociative presentations, in-person is generally recommended first.
Common questions
Can I switch between the two?+
Yes. Mixing formats is normal β in person when you can, online when the week does not allow it.
Is online less confidential?+
The platform is secure. The bigger risk is your end, so a private space matters.
Do you see clients outside Derbyshire?+
Yes, online sessions run UK-wide.
