Hypnotherapy vs counselling

One works largely through conversation and relationship. The other works largely below conscious effort. Neither is superior; they are aimed at different layers.

What each actually does

Counselling gives you a consistent relationship and space to think, understand and integrate. Hypnotherapy uses focused attention to work on patterns that persist despite understanding β€” habits, phobias, automatic responses.

  • Counselling: insight, processing, relationship, open-ended
  • Hypnotherapy: pattern change, usually shorter and targeted
  • Counselling suits grief, identity and long-term difficulty
  • Hypnotherapy suits phobias, habits, performance and sleep

When understanding is not enough

Plenty of people know exactly why they are afraid of driving and remain afraid of driving. That gap between insight and change is precisely where hypnotic work earns its place.

Used together

In this practice they are usually combined: talking work to understand and integrate, hypnotic work to shift the pattern, EMDR where a memory is holding it in place.

Common questions

Is hypnotherapy evidence-based?+

There is decent evidence for specific applications β€” IBS, pain, phobias, smoking. It is weaker as a general treatment for complex trauma, which is why it is combined here rather than used alone.

Will I lose control under hypnosis?+

No. You remain aware, can speak, and can stop at any point.

Which should I book?+
