How many sessions will I need?

Anyone who gives you a precise number before meeting you is guessing. Ranges, though, are reasonable β€” and here they are.

Typical ranges by presentation

These are the ranges seen in practice, not promises. A specific phobia often clears in two to six. Panic and performance anxiety usually take three to eight. Single-incident trauma with EMDR commonly runs six to twelve. Complex or repeated trauma is longer and is planned in blocks with review points.

  • Specific phobia: 2–6 sessions
  • Panic, exam or presentation anxiety: 3–8
  • Single-incident trauma (EMDR): 6–12
  • Complex trauma or self-worth work: 12+, reviewed in blocks

What makes it longer

Multiple traumas, ongoing danger or instability, poor sleep, active substance use, and having no support at all outside the room. None of these are disqualifying; they simply change the pacing and should be said out loud at the start.

Review points beat open-ended drift

Agreeing to review at session six or eight keeps the work accountable. If it is not working, that should be visible to both of us and acted on rather than absorbed.

Common questions

Can I stop whenever I want?+

Yes. A short ending session is encouraged so the work closes properly, but nothing is compulsory.

Is weekly necessary?+

Weekly is best early on, particularly for trauma processing. Spacing out later is normal and often a sign of progress.

What if I need more than we agreed?+

That is discussed openly at the review point, with reasons, rather than quietly extended.
