Counselling vs psychotherapy
The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. There is still a useful distinction, and it is mostly about depth and duration.
The practical distinction
Counselling tends to focus on a present difficulty over a shorter period β a bereavement, a redundancy, a decision. Psychotherapy tends to work with longer-standing patterns, often rooted in early experience, over a longer period.
- Counselling: present-focused, often 6β12 sessions
- Psychotherapy: pattern-focused, months or longer
- Considerable overlap in practice
- Both should be with a registered practitioner
Registration matters more than the label
Neither title is legally protected in the UK. What actually protects you is registration with a recognised body such as the BACP, plus ongoing supervision. Check that before you check the noun.
Starting in one and moving to the other
It is entirely normal to begin with a short focused piece and discover that something longer-standing sits underneath. That is a conversation, not a re-referral.
Common questions
Which is more expensive?+
Session rates are usually similar; total cost differs because psychotherapy typically runs longer.
Do I have to decide upfront?+
No. The first session works out what the problem needs and the plan follows from that.
Is one better for trauma?+
For trauma specifically, the trauma-focused modality β EMDR, for instance β matters more than which of these two labels is used.
Choose by need, not by noun
Free intro call β bring the problem, not a diagnosis of which service you need.
