The anxiety reset
BACP-registered · In-person Derby · Online UK · Confidential

Most anxiety advice targets the wrong layer. Thought-challenging, worry lists and reassurance can help, but they operate above the actual driver — a nervous system stuck in low-grade threat.
The alarm system
Anxiety is your alarm system firing when there's no fire. The fix isn't better arguments with the alarm; it's teaching the system that it's safe.
Three things that actually help
- Longer exhale than inhale. Physiologically signals safety. Try 4 in, 8 out for two minutes.
- Ground through the senses. Name five things you see, four you hear, three you can touch. Interrupts the loop.
- Move slowly, on purpose. Slow walking, slow drinking, slow speaking. Speed feeds anxiety.
When to get help
If the loop won't shift, or you can identify a specific event underneath, therapy that includes EMDR or hypnotherapy usually moves it faster than talking alone.
