What brings people to psychotherapy in Derby

Most people who come to AIP Therapy are not in crisis. They are functioning — going to work, managing their relationships, getting through the day. But something is not right. There is a persistent weight they cannot shake. A pattern that keeps repeating. A version of themselves they know exists but cannot seem to reach.

Psychotherapy is not about being broken. It is about understanding what is driving your experience and building the capacity to respond differently — with less suffering, more clarity and more control.

Common reasons people seek psychotherapy

  • Anxiety, panic attacks and chronic worry
  • Trauma responses and PTSD
  • Stress, burnout and emotional exhaustion
  • Low mood, depression and emotional flatness
  • Sleep problems and recurring nightmares
  • Low confidence and persistent self-doubt
  • Anger, emotional overwhelm and reactivity
  • Relationship difficulties and communication breakdown
  • Work stress and performance anxiety
  • ADHD-related emotional and behavioural challenges
  • Overthinking, decision fatigue and avoidance
  • Habits and patterns that feel impossible to change
Psychotherapy in Derby — private, confidential sessions with James Harris

How integrative psychotherapy works at AIP

James Harris is a BACP-registered integrative psychotherapist. Integrative means the work is not confined to a single model — it draws on whichever frameworks are most useful for you, at this stage, with these specific challenges.

The goal is not endless talking without direction. It is practical progress — understanding what is driving your experience, and building real capacity to respond differently.

Psychodynamic understanding

Exploring the deeper patterns, early experiences and unconscious processes that shape how you think, feel and behave — without getting lost in the past at the expense of the present.

CBT-informed tools

Practical techniques for identifying and shifting unhelpful thought patterns, managing anxiety responses and building more effective behavioural habits.

Hypnotherapy integration

Where appropriate, hypnotherapy is integrated to work with subconscious patterns — particularly useful for anxiety, sleep disruption, confidence and deeply ingrained habits.

NLP-informed techniques

Reframing the internal narrative, shifting limiting beliefs and building more useful mental models for how you relate to yourself and the world around you.

What a psychotherapy session actually looks like

Many people put off starting therapy because they are not sure what to expect. Here is what a session at AIP Therapy in Derby involves.

Before you start — free intro call

A 15-minute call to talk through what you are dealing with, ask any questions and check whether working together makes sense. No commitment required.

First session — assessment and direction

A full 50-minute session to explore your history, current challenges and goals. James will outline a suggested approach and you will agree on how to proceed together.

Ongoing sessions — structured progress

Regular sessions with a clear focus each time. Progress is reviewed openly. The approach adapts as your needs change. You are always in control of the pace and direction.
